Scoop with custom geotextile from TEFAB in the Noordwaard
TEFAB supplied the geotextile for the Noordwaard project exactly to the size of the path to be paved. Contractor Van der Plas Civiel B.V. therefore saved considerably on man hours and material costs. The absence of cutting waste also made this project particularly sustainable. The contractor intends to benefit from this innovative material supply by TEFAB more often in the future.
Letting nature take its course again
As part of Room for the River, Noordwaard was "given back" to the New Merwede in 2015. This reclamation allowed nature to take its course again in the original flood plain. With this, the New Noordwaard has been added to the National Park De Biesbosch. To respond more quickly to calamities, the Rivierenland Water Board made the first preparations in the course of 2020.
Maintenance paths with semi-paving
Project manager Willem Jan de Bruijn of contractor Van der Plas Civiel explains:
The Improvements Noordwaard project consisted of 3 pillars:
- Reinforce maintenance paths on the quays with semi-paving
- Install ramps to access wharves
- Reinstalling the support berms
TEFAB supplied the large quantity of geotextile for the maintenance paths with a total length of 13 kilometers. The TF 40/40 fabric has a different, lesser, tolerance and enough bearing capacity to meet the requirements of the Rivierenland Water Board. Moreover, it was delivered exactly to the width dimension of the path in rolls of not 100, but 500 meters. The contractor himself developed a frame with equalizer to make unrolling and handling easier.
With this custom-made geotextile, client and contractor benefit from saved man-hours, costs and waste compared to cloths of a standard size. 'With this, TEFAB has really distinguished itself.' said project manager Willem Jan.
Process-based approach
With attention to the environment, the Noordwaard Improvements project was carried out. By completing everything in phases, inconvenience was limited and peace was largely preserved for local residents. When (semi-)paving roads and paths, the process almost always consists of 4 steps:
- Excavate and dispose of the topsoil with clean sand.
- Inserting geotextiles
- Excavated clean sand mixed with certified rubble aggregate (suitable for quays). The recycled building materials provide additional strength in this semi-paving.
- Apply mixed sand back and flatten to reinforce the path.
This video from Water Board Rivierenland shows how the TF 40/40 geotextile was applied:
Fine way of doing business
Jan Willem praises working with TEFAB. I have been doing business with Ron from TEFAB for some time now. The contact is simply very pleasant and fine, we can coordinate things well. We have a fairly flat organizational structure ourselves and I also notice that at TEFAB. You just deal with one person and you coordinate everything with him. These short lines of communication are very pleasant and flexible for us.
Result
On the quays of the New Noordwaard, TEFAB's innovative approach has provided the Rivierenland Water Board with a beautiful, safe maintenance path with ramps and ramps. For contractor Van der Plas, it meant saving on materials, time and costs. During implementation, the breeding season was taken into account. This allowed the flora and fauna to get going undisturbed and reoccupy the reclaimed area. On the reinforced paths, long walks in the new Biesbosch can now be enjoyed.
'What's special about TEFAB is the way they both delivered the coils to us in a customized way and that they were able to organize to work with a deviating tolerance so that it complied with the bearing capacity, normally it would not have complied.' - Willem Jan de Bruijn, project manager Van der Plas Civiel B.V. from Giessen
